Hokuriku, which faces the Sea of Japan and is located in approximately the central part of Japan, is comprised of the three prefectures of Toyama, Ishikawa, and Fukui. To its north lies the Sea of Japan and to its east lies the Tateyama mountain range. Moreover, Hokuriku is a beautiful place which vividly reflects the regular changes of four seasons from spring to summer to autumn and to winter.

The Hokuriku Region has an area of 12,623 square km (3.3% of Japan's total area) with a population of 3,070,000 (2.4% of Japan's total population), is located in the central part of Honshu within the reach of 300 km from the Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka metropolitan areas.

In FY2008, gross product (nominal) of the Hokuriku Prefectures was 12,281.3 billion yen, or 2.4% of the gross national product of that year.

Of this gross prefectural product, the primary industry accounted for 1.1%, while shares of the secondary and tertiary sectors were 27.3% and 71.6%, respectively.

This means that share of the secondary (manufacturing) sector in Hokuriku was larger than the national average, while that of wholesale/retail and other service sector was below the average.
